EVANSTON, Ill. - Sophomore left-hander J.A. Happ (Peru, Ill./St, Bede Academy) was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week announced by the conference office today. This is Happ's second Pitcher of the Week award this season, becoming one of two Big Ten hurlers to earn the distinction a second time. Minnesota's C.J. Woodrow has also won the award twice. This is the third time a Wildcat pitcher has been honored as junior Dan Konecny took home the weekly award back on Feb. 18. In all, Happ is the fifth Wildcat to be named either Big Ten Player or Pitcher of the Week this season.
Happ threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout Sunday afternoon, blanking Michigan State 2-0 in East Lansing, Mich. Happ needed just 87 pitches to pick up the win in the second game of Sunday's twinbill. Happ improved to 4-2 on the season and lowered his overall ERA to 2.85. He struck out eight Spartans in the game, and has totaled 42 Ks in 41 innings pitched in seven starts. It is the third time this season Happ has allowed only two hits in a game. In his 41 innings of work, Happ has given up just 33 hits, including limiting MSU to a 2-for-23 performance (.087) Sunday. For the season, opposing teams are batting .224 against Happ.
NU is back in action tomorrow as they travel to Valparaiso, Ind., to take on Valparaiso University in a 3 p.m., nine-inning contest. The Wildcats have an overall record of 10-10 and are 3-3 in the Big Ten.
