After having Friday and Saturday's baseball games rained out, Northwestern and Michigan State finally took the diamond Sunday afternoon. With temperatures in the low 30's, MSU used a sixth-inning, two-RBI James Moreno single through the left side to win 3-2. NU fell to 9-10 overall, 2-3 in the Big Ten. The Spartans improved to 7-17, 1-4.

Northwestern jumped out early as right-fielder Brandon Ackley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) hit his first home run of the season to left-centerfield. Catcher Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) came around to score after singling to center. Both runs came with two outs.

MSU answered in the bottom of the third, scoring one run on two hits. Erik Morris hit into a bases-loaded double play to score Jim Deliz from third base. Deliz reached on a single to center.

NU threatened in the top of the sixth, failing to take advantage of three Spartan miscues. Spartan hurler Bryan Gale induced a pop out and groundout to end the threat. NU had runners on first and third with one out.

Michigan State took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when James Moreno hit a bases-loaded single through the left side, giving MSU a 3-2 lead.

The Wildcats did threaten in the top of the seventh, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but Gale got senior second-baseman Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) to ground out to short to end the game.

Wildcat starter Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) went the distance in the loss. Konecny falls to 2-3 with all three of his losses coming by one run. He has also thrown at least six innings in all seven of his starts this season.
