EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern announced the recipients of the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week. The male winner was Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) of the baseball team, and the female winner was Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) of the softball team. The two student-athletes were recognized for their athletic achievement from the week of April 21-27.
Brauer threw the first complete game of his collegiate career, downing Illinois 4-1 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The left-hander stymied Illini hitters for the entire contest, allowing just one hit and striking out four in the seven-inning contest. Brauer lowered his overall ERA to 2.80-the second lowest on the team-and his Big Ten ERA to 3.38. He is holding opposing hitters to a measly .227 batting average, and has struck out 35 hitters in 35.1 innings of work.
Foster was basically unhittable last week, tossing three shutouts as the Wildcats went 4-0. She opened the week with a remarkable 18-strikeout performance in a 1-0 win at Loyola-Chicago Wednesday. The 18 strikeouts were the most by a Northwestern pitcher in a game since 1987. In a 3-0 win Friday at Iowa, she limited the Big Ten's second-ranked offense to just two hits while striking out 12. The next day, Foster took the mound again and fired her third shutout of the week, allowing three hits and fanning 11 in the 2-0 win. She has not allowed an earned run over her last 31.2 innings and has allowed only 10 hits during that span. Foster's average of 9.68 strikeouts per seven innings ranks in the top 12 nationally.
