Wildcats Sweep Spartans, 7-0

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team, ranked 23rd in the nation, defeated Michigan State 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. Northwestern improves to 15-8 on the season and 7-2 in the Big Ten. The Spartans fall to 8-13, 0-9.
The 'Cats opened the match with a sweep of doubles. The eighth-ranked duo of Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush stymied MSU's Caroline Lay and Keri Thompson at No. 1, 8-0. Andrea Yung and Jamie Peisel downed Josie Schmude and Marta Walasek, 8-1 at No. 2. Ruth Barnes and Connie Chiang closed out the sweep with a 8-3 win over Karen Gustafson and Kate Thomas.
In singles, Northwestern continued to dominate, winning all six matches in straight sets. No. 6 Grier upped her dual-match record to 22-0, defeating Thompson 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1. Rush was the 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 2 over Caroline Lay. Peisel posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gustafson at No. 3. Yung was the 6-1, 6-0 victor at No. 4, knocking off Thomas. Barnes was victorious at No. 5, defeating Schmude 6-0, 6-3. Rounding out the latter half of the lineup, Stacky Kokx shutout Walasek, 6-0, 6-0.
The 'Cats are back in action on Sunday, April 20 when they host Michigan in the regular season finale.
