EVANSTON, Ill. -

Northwestern announced the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their athletic performance from the week of April 7. The male recipient was Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) of the tennis team, and the female recipient was Brett Nakabayashi (Irvine, Calif./Irvine) of the softball team.

Axler won three of his four matches last weekend as NU hosted Penn State and No. 24 Ohio State. Axler clinched the win for NU on Senior Day against Penn State, downing the Nittany Lions' Malcolm Scatliffe 7-6, 6-3. He picked up his third straight singles win Sunday against Ohio State's Conor Casey in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Axler also paired with classmate Russell Bennett at No. 2 doubles where the duo upended PSU's Scatliffe and Brad Nudell 8-3 Saturday. Axler is 15-15 overall in singles play, including 4-4 in the Big Ten. He has a 17-13 overall doubles record.

Nakabayashi posted a .615 batting average (8-for-13) for NU as the 'Cats went 3-1 last weekend. She hit safely in all four games, including three multi-hit games to run her hitting streak to six. Nakabayashi went 3-for-3 as Northwestern defeated Indiana 2-1 Saturday. In Sunday afternoon's 1-0 win over Purdue in the twinbill opener of a doubleheader, she had two hits and made a run-saving diving catch to preserve the shutout. Nakabayashi added two hits in the nightcap. She also scored two runs to go over 100 for her career (101), becoming just the fourth player in school history to reach the milestone.
