Purdue scored five runs in the final two innings, to defeat Northwestern 8-3, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston, Ill. NU pitching and a couple timely errors proved costly as NU falls to 11-11 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten.
NU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when junior Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) hit a bases-loaded single to right-center field, scoring Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) and Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel). Both Roeder and Mikrut each singled in their at-bats, with a David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) walk sandwiched between the hits.
Purdue came right back in the top of the second, taking advantage of three walks by Wildcat starter J.A. Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) to score a single run. After two base-on-balls and a strikeout, Brad Kriner lined a single to right, scoring Simon Klink from second base.
Purdue pulled ahead in the contest, scoring two runs on two hits, to make the score 3-2 Boilermakers.
NU tied the score in the bottom half of the inning, as Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) nailed his fourth home run of the season. Pohlman's solo shot was the 15th of the season for the Wildcats.
The Boilermakers regained the lead, 5-3, in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits.
Purdue extended their lead in the seventh, as Wildcat reliever Evan Blesoff (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest), who came in relief of Happ in the sixth inning, was touched for three runs on three hits in one and one-third innings pitched.
