In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Rocky Miller Park, Purdue jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings and never looked back. The Boilermakers tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, completing the doubleheader sweep. NU falls to 11-12 overall, 4-5 in the Big Ten. Purdue improves to 17-13, 6-5.
With two outs and Purdue leading 1-0, Wildcat starter Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) walked the bases loaded and hit Mitch Koester with a pitch, giving the Boilermakers a 2-0 lead. But Purdue wasn't done there, as the next hitter hit a fly ball to left-field that was lost in the sun. With two runs already across the plate on the play, left-fielder Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) retrieved the baseball and threw out Koester at the plate for the final out.
After scoring their first four runs with two outs, Purdue repeated the feat in the top of the sixth, scoring a single run after Ori recorded two fly-ball outs. He then surrendered three-straight singles, as Purdue went up 5-0.
Purdue tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Stanley Finch (Lubbock, Texas/Cooper) relieved Ori to start the inning. Finch loaded the bases giving up a single and hitting two Purdue batters. Freshman Julio Siberio (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) relieved Finch, inducing two ground-ball outs, one of which allowed a Boilermaker run to score.
Purdue starter, Scott Byrnes, threw a complete-game three-hitter, and struck out six in the process.
The Wildcats and Boilermakers wrap up the four-game series at Rocky Miller Park with a single nine-inning contest beginning at 1 p.m., on Sunday.
