Ohio State second-baseman Drew Anderson went 3-for-3 with a run scored as Ohio State defeated Northwestern, 4-1, in Game 1 of a Friday doubleheader in Bradenton, Fla. NU's David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) was the only Wildcat to have two hits in the game.

The Buckeyes got on the board first, scoring one run on two hits in the top of the third inning. Derek Kinnear led off with a bloop single to left field and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Game 1 hero, Mike Rabin, advanced Kinnear to third on a ground out to second. Left-fielder Steve Caravati stepped up and drove Wildcat starter J.A. Happ's (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) pitch through the left side to give OSU the 1-0 lead.

OSU went right back at in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits, and taking advantage of two Happ walks. Paul Farinacci and Anderson came around to score on Doug Larason's sacrifice fly to right and Kinnear's single through the right side.

Neither team made any significant threats until OSU shortstop Jedidiah Stephen led of the top of seventh with a solo home run down the left-field line.

Sophomore right-hander Evan Blesoff (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) relieved Happ in the seventh, recording two fly-outs and a strikeout to end the inning. Blesoff did walk one Buckeye hitter.

In the bottom of the seventh, shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) singled up the middle but was thrown out at second on Mark Ori's (Niles, Ill./Maine South) groundball to shortstop. With two outs and Ori on first, first baseman Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) tattooed a 1-0 fastball down the right-field line for his second double of the season. McMahon's RBI double prevented NU's second consecutive shutout as the Buckeyes won a 1-0 pitchers dual on Thursday.
