KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Northwestern senior Jason Erwinski (Tinley Park, Ill./Mt. Carmel) fell one win short from becoming an All-American on Friday night at the 2003 NCAA Championships. The senior defeated Nick Nemeth of Kent State and Matt Palmer of Columbia in the morning session, but fell to ninth-seeded Matt R. King of Edinboro in the evening, ending his tournament run.
King, the No. 15 165-pounder in the country, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking the match 8-1.
Erwinski tallied his first win of the day against Nemeth. With a nip-and-tuck match that ended in a 1-1 tie after regulation, Erwinski took down 16th-ranked Nemeth in overtime for the 3-1 sudden victory. Erwinski followed that with a 6-4 decision against 11th-ranked Palmer.
The two wins Friday were Erwinski's second and third against ranked opponents in the championships. He defeated No. 17 Tom McMath in the opening round Thursday. With a 3-2 tournament mark, Erwinski concluded the season with a 24-15 overall record, the best record of any Wildcat wrestler this season.
Erwinski missed becoming the first NU All-American since 2000 (Scott Schatzman) and the 16th since head coach Tim Cysewski took the helm.
