Erwinski Advances to Second Day of NCAA Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Northwestern senior Jason Erwinski (Tinley Park, Ill./Mt. Carmel) advanced to the round of 16 in the championship bracket Thursday at the NCAA Championships, before being bumped into the consolation bracket later in the evening. During session one, Erwinski upended 17th-ranked Tom McMath of West Virginia by a 9-8 margin, but he dropped his second-session match to Troy Letters of Lehigh.

Erwinski started the day strong, jumping out to a 7-3 advantage against McMath and holding on for the win. Erwinski took on second-seeded and second-ranked Troy Letters of Lehigh in the evening session. Letters defeated Erwinski by fall at the 2:02 mark, his second consecutive pin of the day. Letters upped his overall record to 35-1.

With a 1-1 record after day one, Erwinski's season mark moved to 22-13 and 7-6 since dropping to the 165-pound class.

Erwinski's next opponent will be Nick Nemeth of Kent State. Nemeth dropped his opening match but defeated Lock Haven's Jason Gilligan to stay alive.
