3/2/2003 12:00:00 AM | Softball
Foster allowed just one hit and two base runners to reach through the first six innings of play. The Vikings recorded back-to-back hits to open the seventh inning, but Foster struck out the next two batters and got Kayla Lewis to ground out to shortstop Robyn Pettinger (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) to secure the win.
NU got all the offense it would need in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, J.C. Kira (Honolulu, Hawaii/Saint Francis) singled to left field, scoring Cindy Muran (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) from third base.
Northwestern tacked on two more unearned runs in the third. With runners at second and third with one out, Muran grounded out to short. Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) scored on the play and Carri Leto (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) followed behind her on an ensuing throwing error by the first baseman.
The Wildcats outhit the Vikings 7-3 in the game, led by two hits by Mobley who singled and tripled.
NU is back in action Thursday when it travels to Plant City, Fla. to open play at the Speedline Invitational. The Wildcats face Ball State at 2 p.m. Eastern time, followed by Hofstra at 4 p.m.
