EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern announced Monday that Jitim Young (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) of the men's basketball team and Ashley Carter (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) of the women's swimming and diving team earned Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the week honors. The two athletes were recognized for their athletic performance for the week of March 10.
Young led the way in Northwestern's first-round, 76-64 win against Minnesota last Thursday at the Big Ten Tournament. He scored 20 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the field, and tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds. Young also matched season and career highs with three 3-point baskets and five assists. Young scored just five points in Friday's loss to Illinois, but his lone field goal-a three-pointer-pushed him over 1,000 points for his career. Young becomes the second NU player to reach the milestone this season (Winston Blake did it on Feb. 5) and the 25th all-time; he is just the 13th Wildcat to accomplish the feat in three seasons.
Carter earned a pair of 11th-place finishes while representing Northwestern last weekend at the NCAA Diving Zone C competition held in Oxford, Ohio. The sophomore reached the finals in two events, posting scores of 315.15 in platform diving and 439.50 on the 1-meter board.
