MADISON - Matching up with the nation's fourth-best player, freshman Cristelle Grier clinched the win for the Wildcats with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Vilmarie Castellvi. Grier finishes the weekend 3-0 and beat the Nos. 3, 4 and 20 players in the country. Grier's win put the score at 4-1 en route to Northwestern's 4-3 win over No. 11 Tennessee in the final consolation match of the United State Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon in Madison, Wis.

The 14th-ranked Wildcats improve to 6-4 on the season as Tennessee drops to 5-2.

Grier's weekend did not end at her singles play. She and doubles teammate Jessica Rush were undefeated at No. 1, stunning the Nos. 9 and 22 teams. The tandem knocked off the No. 22 team of Melissa Schaub and Castellvi, 8-6. Ruth Barnes and Andrea Yung rebounded from an 8-3 loss at No. 2 on Friday to defeat Tammy Encina and Breanna Kray 8-5, securing the deciding doubles point for Northwestern.

In singles, the Wildcats were ahead in five of the six spots after the first set, but could only pull out wins-Nos. 1, 2 and 4. Rush was the straight-set victor over Encina at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2). Freshman Jamie Peisel defeated Kray at No. 4, 7-6(4), 6-4.

The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Kentucky. This will be the seventh meeting between the two teams. Northwestern leads the series 5-1. Match time is slated for 11 a.m. Central.
