Northwestern Sweeps Indiana in Big Ten Opener, 7-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the sweep of Indiana Sunday afternoon in Bloomington, the Northwestern Wildcats extended their conference win streak to 21 and inched head coach Claire Pollard closer to the 100-win mark at Northwestern. Pollard is 98-26 in her four plus seasons.
The Wildcats improve to 7-5 (1-0 Big Ten) on the season as Indiana drops to 5-5 (0-2 Big Ten).
After being swept in doubles a day before, Northwestern rebounded to win two of the three matches for the first point of the match. NU's Jamie Peisel and Kristi Roemer defeated Sophie Rychlik and Jessica Roth, 8-0, at No. 3. IU took the match at No. 2, defeating Andrea Yung and Ruth Barnes, 8-4. With the doubles tied, it came down to the match at No. 1. Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush battled IU's Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran and finally broke serve at 6-5. The 'Cats served out the rest of the match to win 8-5 and give NU the early advantage.
In singles, it was all Northwestern as the 'Cats downed each of their opponents in straight sets. Grier extended her dual-match record to 12-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Tran at No. 1. Rush bounced back from a three-set loss suffered on Saturday to defeat Sarah Batty 7-6, 62 at No. 2. Yung, 2-0 this weekend, downed Martina Grimm 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. Peisel, also 2-0 on the weekend, defeated Dominika Walterova at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4. It was Barnes claiming victory at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Schlukebir. Making her first appearance in the singles lineup this season, Roemer defeated Rychlik, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
After a 13-day break, Northwestern will hit the courts again on March 1 when they host William & Mary at the Combe Tennis Center. Match time is set for 11 a.m. Central.
