DEKALB, Ill.--Three Northwestern wrestlers went undefeated to lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 showing at the Northern Illinois Duals.
Josh Ballard (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad), Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) each went 3-0 as NU (5-1 overall) crushed Elmhurst College 40-6 and Loras College 32-8 but lost to Northern Illinois 21-12.
"Those three guys did a great job," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "We definitely had the opportunity to win all three matches, but it just did not go our way tonight."
After falling behind 5-0 to Loras, the 'Cats answered with 32-straight points to cruise to the win. Delguyd was one of two NU wrestlers to get a win by major decision in the match.
The Huskies proved to be a more difficult opponent, as only Ballard, Delguyd, Velez and Michael Little (El Reno, Okla./El Reno) got victories (all by decision). Northern Illinois, which swept the Duals, broke a 12-12 tie by earning decisions in the last three bouts (157 lbs., 165 lbs. and 174 lbs.) and subsequently picked up the win.
"The loss at 157 lbs. was the turning point in the match," said Cysewski, noting that the scoring table had originally Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) being victorious. "The screw up really threw us off. It still was a hard-fought match, but I thought we could have won."
Northwestern was able to bounce back in its third match, howevever, snagging wins against Elmhurt in all but the 184- and 157-pound weight classes.
The Wildcats take a week off for finals before heading to Washington, D.C. to take on American at 7 p.m. (EST) Dec. 17.
