EVANSTON, Ill.--Some notes from Session 1:
- San Francisco State's Donald Lockett upset Cornell's top-seeded Travis Lee, last year's champion at 125 lbs., 6-0 in their second-round bout in the 133-pound division.
- Sunkist Kids' Joe Williams, a nine-time Midlands champion, improved his Midlands record to 52-2 with his second- and third-round wins in the 174-pound division today.
- Ohio State's Tommy Rowlands is now just three wins away from becoming the 16th member of the "20 in 4" club (20 wins in his first four Midlands tournaments).
- Unattached wrestler Mike Rio set a new record for fastest fall in the 149-pound division with his 15-second pin of Penn's Craig Wright. The previous record was 21 seconds, held by both Penn State's Nate Galloway and Schultz Wrestling Club's Roger Chandler.
- Top five teams after three rounds of championship and consolation:
1) Penn State - 35.0 points
2) Hofstra - 31.0
Iowa State - 31.0
4) Illinois - 30.5
5) Central Michigan - 27.5
Iowa - 27.5
