NEWARK, Del.--Competing on the road on consecutive days apparently did not faze Northwestern's wrestling team.
One day after getting a win by technical fall in a dual match against American, John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) tallied five more victories en route to winning the title at 125 lbs. and helping NU to a fourth-place finish at the 20-team Beast of the East Invitational on Friday.
Velez, who improved to 14-1 after downing Kent State's Drew Opfer 4-2 in the final, led three other Wildcats in placing as NU scored 80 team points. Pittsburgh compiled 126.5 to win, with Kent State (107) and Rider (97) following to round out the top three.
Two 'Cats took second place in their respective divisions. Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) lost to Pittsburgh's Josh Birt 9-1 in the 197-pound title match, while Michael Little (El Reno, Okla./El Reno) was pinned by Rider's Carmelo Marrero in 20 seconds to fall just short of the heavyweight crown.
One other NU wrestler to place was Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara), who lost 3-2 to Pittsburgh's Justin Nestor and consequently took fourth place at 157 lbs.
The Wildcats take a one-week break before playing host to the 41st Midlands Wrestling Championships, held Dec. 29-30 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
