EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) took the crown at 174 lbs. to lead four other Wildcats in placing on the final day of competition at the Michigan State Open.

No. 6 seed John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) ended up in fourth place at 125 lbs., Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/Lakewood) took third at 141 lbs., Josh Ballard (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad) grabbed second at 149 lbs. and Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) finished seventh at 197 lbs.

Herbert, a freshman making his first collegiate appearance, took down Pittsburgh's Francis Iorfido in the championship match. Along the way, Herbert had a 6-4 upset of No. 4 seed Kevin Carr of Central Michigan, and topped Columbia's No. 5 seed Matt Palmer 11-7.

"I am pleased with how our wrestlers did," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "I was particularly impressed by the freshmen, especially Jake. I look forward to seeing them compete throughout the season."

The Michigan State Open, which runs annually, is not a team tournament and no team scores are kept. School affiliation is for identification and organizational purposes only.

The Wildcats will take a one-week break before running the NU Duals Nov. 22.
