NU Begins Play at Badger Blast

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wildcats finished the first day of the Badger Blast with a split against Iowa and a drubbing of Wisconsin.
In the morning, the NU duo of Andrea Yung (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) and Ruth Barnes (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) picked up the only Wildcat doubles win against Iowa, beating Jennifer Hodgman and Chelsea Glynn 8-4.
Iowa took the next two matches, as Hillary Mintz and Megan Racette dropped Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) 8-2, while the Iowa pair of Hilary Tyler and Hilde Jansma edged Kristi Roemer (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) and Georgie Wolffer (Sagaponack, N.Y./Westminster) 8-6.
In singles matches against Iowa, NU had better luck. Prousis topped Glynn 6-1, 6-4; Roemer defeated Hodgman 6-4, 2-6, 6-4; Barnes knocked down Tyler 6-2, 6-3; and Connie Chiang (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) routed Jen Schulte 8-0 in a pro set.
On the flip side, Jansma took down Wolffer 6-1, 6-2; Racette nipped Peisel 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; and Mintz knocked off Yung 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Later in the afternoon, Northwestern began competition against host Wisconsin. The Badger pair of Katie McGaffigan and Lexi Goldin squeaked by NU's Roemer and Wolffer 8-6. The Wildcats, however, answered by winning the last three matches.
First, Barnes and Prousis defeated Nicole Beck and Lindsay Martin 8-5, then Chiang and Yung stomped Teresa Gonzaga and Shana McElroy 8-1. In the proceeding singles match, Chiang cleared Kaylan Caiati 6-3, 6-0.
The final day of the Badger Blast begins 9 a.m. Sunday with another round of doubles matches against Wisconsin.
