EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern wrestling team begins its 2003-04 season Saturday with a trip to East Lansing, Mich., site of the Michigan State Open.
More than 350 wrestlers will compete in the two-day, double-elimination event. NU will be sending most of its team to the Open.
"This tournament will give us a sense of what we need to do to prepare against other teams this year," said head coach Tim Cysewski. "I'm anxious to see how we're progressing, and I'm expecting that we will do very well."
Last year, Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop McNamara) lost his first match but then reeled off seven straight wins in the consolation bracket to take third place at 157 lbs.
Teammate Matt Delguyd (Mayfield, Ohio/Mayfield) reached the quarterfinals of the 197-pound bracket before falling, and John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) placed sixth at 125 lbs.
Also placing last year was former Wildcat and current assistant coach John Giacche, who finished fifth at 141 lbs.
The other Big Ten schools that will have wrestlers compete are Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin.
