ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A long but successful day could turn out longer on Friday for Northwestern sophomore Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Putney).

The No. 3 seed in the ITA National Indoor Championships survived a tough battle in the morning against California's Sasha Podkolzina, winning 7-6 (3), 6-3 to move on to tomorrow's Round of 16.

"Grier played a very difficult first round match," said head coach Claire Pollard. "Her experience playing in big events, especially in last year's tournament, helped her win today."

In the late afternoon, Grier teamed up with Jessica Rush (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) to form the second-seeded doubles pair. The Wildcat duo rolled past Florida's Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes 8-1, and will next face New Mexico's Sandy Lukowski/Maja Kovacek.

That means if Grier wins her singles match tomorrow against Nebraska's Gitte Ostermann, she will also play in Friday night's quarterfinals and total three matches in one day.

"Friday will be a long day," said Pollard. "But others will have a long day, too."
