EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern women's tennis team will split its squad this weekend, sending two to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., and seven to the Badger Blast in Madison, Wis.
Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Putney) earned her second-straight singles bid to the ITA Nationals after winning the ITA Midwest Championships singles title last week. As the No. 3 seed, she will face California's Sasha Podkolzina, the Northwest regional winner, in the field of 32's first round action on Thursday.
Last year, Grier and then-teammate Marine Piriou both fell in the second round of the tournament.
Grier will be joined by Jessica Rush (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) this time around, as the two won the ITA Midwest doubles title last week. The Wildcat duo is seeded second and will compete against Florida's Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes, at-large selections, in the field of 16's first round action, also on Thursday.
"We are excited to be involved in such an elite tournament," said head coach Claire Pollard. "We are well prepared and look forward to the great opportunity."
Singles play will run through Sunday, while doubles matches will end on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Badger Blast is taking place this Friday through Sunday at the University of Wisconsin. The hidden dual-style tournament, which replaces the recently canceled Minnesota Invitational, will see three schools compete.
The Wildcats are scheduled to play Iowa on Saturday and Wisconsin on Sunday. Draws have not yet been announced.
