EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named Justin Pines (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) and Cristelle Grier (Surrey, England/Putney) its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Pines, a freshman on the soccer team, tallied the first shutout of his young career, carrying the Wildcats to a 0-0 tie against Wisconsin. He made seven saves in the game, including two from close range in overtime.
The shutout was the Wildcats' first against a Big Ten opponent since they blanked the Badgers 2-0 in 1999.
Grier, a sophomore on the tennis team, did not drop a set en route to defending her ITA Midwest Championships singles title last Tuesday in Kalamazoo, Mich. As the top-seeded player in the tournament, Grier beat Notre Dame's No. 2 seed Alicia Salas 6-2, 6-2 to improve to 7-1 this season.
Grier, who was also part of the top-seeded doubles team, won the doubles championship the day before. This honor marks the fifth time Grier has been selected as the Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week.
