EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern brings it home and keeps it local with Monday's game vs. city-rival DePaul. Taking the momentum gained from last Wednesday's road win over the University of Dayton, the 'Cats are looking to net their third win of the 2003-04 season.
The opening three games of the season have been decided by an average of nine points, with NU rolling over Creighton 59-41, falling 67-60 at Kentucky and taking a 49-47 win at Dayton. DePaul, on the other hand, holds two convincing wins over UW-Milwaukee (94-62) and Northwestern State (109-73) in their own Moran Realty classic.
Northwestern co-captain Samantha McComb led the 'Cats at Dayton with her career-high 22-point performance, including an 8-of-9 mark at the foul line. Foul shots were indeed the difference as Northwestern was at the line 17 times compared to Dayton's six. NU hit 13 of those shots for 75%.
McComb also leads her team overall this season, averaging 13.3 ppg and 34.7 min/g.
Sophomore Ifeoma Okonkwo has come on strong, scoring 12.3 ppg. Her 5.7 rpg also ranks second while she shoots a team high .636. Junior Sarah Kwasinski averages 10.3 ppg and a team-leading 6.7 boards/g.
Northwestern holds an edge over their opponents in 3-point field goals this season (4.7, .259 pct) thanks in part to junior Melissa Culver. Culver's .400 pct leads the Cats (min. 10 attempts).
For DePaul, Ashley Luke is bringing home 17.0 ppg, while Khara Smith is third with 16.0 ppg and leads her team with 12.0 rpg. The Blue Demons may loom large at Welsh-Ryan, as they average 11.5 3-pt fg/g with 20.5 steals/g.
A LOOK AHEAD...
Northwestern hosts Drexel, Eastern Michigan and Florida International this weekend in the Mildred and Roger L. White Invitational. NU will play Drexel at 5 p.m. Friday before the consolation/championship round on Saturday.
