'Cats Make Their Way To Dayton

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern is 1-1 after the first week of the 2003-04 schedule and brings that mark to Dayton, Ohio this week for a nonconference game against the University of Dayton Flyers. Dayton is also 1-1 coming into the contest, having beaten Boise State 73-71 and falling to Texas Pan American 57-63.

The 'Cats got strong performances last week from Sarah Kwasinski and Ifeoma Okonkwo, who each put up 16-point games. The junior center and sophomore forward lead the team with points, averaging 12.5 per game. Kwasinski also leads the Wildcats with an average of 8.5 boards per game and Okonkwo is shooting a team-leading .643 from the floor. Okonkwo's 16 points set a new single-game record for the Texas native.

Junior guard Melissa Culver has hit 3-of-5 from 3-point range (.600) this season and was NU's second-leading scorer vs. Creighton (11 pts.). Co-captain Samantha McComb brought home 14 points for second among her teammates at Kentucky.

The Flyers are led by Emily Williams and Jennifer Strong. Williams is averaging 18 ppg, shooting 12-of-22 and 7-of-7 from the foul line. She was recently named to the Air Force Classic All-Tournament team after averaging 18.0 points per game in two games.Strong averages 14 ppg and led the Flyers with 21 points in the championship game. Amber Peterink leads the Flyers with 9.5 boards per game, including 11 vs. Texas Pan American.

Northwestern and Dayton have met four times and the series is tied at two games apiece. Most recently, Dayton played spoiler and beat NU 56-49 on December 17, 2002 in Evanston. The last Northwestern win took place on January 23 -- a 75-59 victory.

Following Wednesday's game, the 'Cats return to Welsh-Ryan on December 1 when they host Chicago rival DePaul at 7 p.m.
