EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern wrestling team earned a pair of relatively easy wins, but the drama was saved for the final match of the day as the Wildcats escaped Welsh-Ryan with a 19-14 win over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. As a result, NU finished the day 3-0 at the meet, which ran most of the afternoon.

UW-La Crosse went 1-1 on the day, as did Augustana -- they wrestled four exhibition matches against each other in between their duals -- while Gardner-Webb went 0-3 on the day.

Northwestern got off to a good start in the first matches of the day, defeating Augustana 30-9. Daniel Quintela got things rolling with a major decision (15-1) win in the opening match. Five other Wildcats -- Josh Ballard at 149, Mike Kimberlin at 157, Andrew Curran at 174, Matt Delguyd at 197 and John Velez at 125 -- also won by major decision.

In NU's second match of the day -- a 29-7 win over Gardner-Webb -- Michael Little (heavyweight) and Velez picked up major decision wins, while Joseph Gulotta earned a pin win after just 3:22 against his opponent.

The third match proved to be much tighter. The teams split the first four matches by decision, with Jimmy Kim and Kimberlin winning for NU while Ballard fell in overtime. With the score tied at 6-6, Nick Hayes earned three valuable points when he took a 3-1 overtime decision against Derek Hebrink. Following that, Curran came up with the exact same score in the exact same manner, going beyond the regular three periods to defeat Nick Patenaude.

After Jason Lulloff earned a major-decision win of UWL, Delguyd opened up the gap when he outlasted Jim Swanson, 4-3, after several overtime periods. That gave NU a 15-10 decision with two matches left.

Ryan Allen kept things interesting, winning a major decision over Little and making the score 15-14, but Velez closed it out with a major-decision win against Josh Miller, 13-4, to clinch the win for the Wildcats.

Northwestern will be back in action December 5 at the Northern Illinois Duals.
