EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern women's golf head coach Chris Regenberg announced the signing of Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) to National Letters of Intent today. Trachok and Johnston will begin playing for the Wildcats in the fall of 2004.
"Both of these young ladies are tremendous golfers, and we are elated about the added strength they will bring to our young and talented group next fall," said Regenberg. "The enthusiasm, hardwork, and vision of this team is very exciting."
Trachok has been extremely successful in 2003. She won the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) individual title in leading Upper St. Clair to its 10th consecutive WPIAL team championship. On the national junior circuit, the Pittsburgh native had three top-10 finishes in American Junior Golf Association events. On the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT), Trachok placed in the top-10 on four occasions, including a runner-up finish at the IJGT at The Greenbrier and a third-place finish at the IJGT at Seaview Marriott Resort & Spa.
Johnston is one of the top junior players in Ohio. She earned honorable mention 2003 Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) All-America honors following a victory at the 2003 FCWT Temecula Open. She also won the Kenny Novak Memorial Tournament, which serves as the championship for the Northern Ohio PGA Junior series. In 2001, Johnston was a member of Walsh Jesuit's state championship team. She currently holds the school's 18-hole scoring record (68) and tied the school's nine-hole record (34). Johnston's father is a PGA Master Golf Professional in Akron, Ohio.
Trachok chose Northwestern over Penn State and Michigan State; Johnston decided on NU over Michigan State, Penn State, Kent State and Bradley.
The 'Cats finished their fall season ranked No. 34 in the Golfweek/Sagarin index. NU takes a break for the winter before returning to action in February with a dual match against Michigan State in Orlando, Fla.
