MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Soccer has a way of being a funny game -- sometimes the better team does not win.
The Northwestern women found that out the hard way Friday night in Milwaukee. The Wildcats were dominant in the first half of their match with Conference USA front-runner Marquette, but the Eagles righted themselves and ultimately finished the game in the first overtime session to escape with a 1-0 victory.
The loss drops NU to 7-9-1 overall and guarantees that the 'Cats will not finish at .500 for the season. Marquette finishes its regular season with an 11-7-1 mark
"This was a deflating loss," said head coach Jenny Haigh. "We played great, and really we could have been up a few goals early on. However, we missed some great chances, and to their credit Marquette hung in there. The game was much more even in the second half, and then they took advantage of an opportunity to get the win. However, I really feel that we won the game but for our finishing."
Northwestern outshot Marquette 10-3 in the first half and 21-13 for the match, and took 13 corner kicks to the Eagles' six. However, the match ended at the 98:15 mark when freshman midfielder Lauren Weber finished off a pass from sophomore midfielder Heather Goranson.
NU goalkeeper Whitney Jones had three saves on the night, while Marquette's Katie Bissen had seven (five in the first half alone).
Northwestern will conclude the regular season Sunday with a noon match at UW-Milwaukee.
