Halloween HOOP-la Recap

Oct. 31, 2003

It was a night of tricks and treats at SPAC Thursday, as the Northwestern University men's and women's basketball teams entertained more than 300 students and fans as part of the third annual Halloween HOOP-la.

The student line snaked straight out of the basketball courts and into the corridor as they picked up their tickets for the upcoming season as well as took advantage of the free pizza, soda and candy that was offered. Following a half-hour scrimmage, the Wildcat teams went interactive with the students for a series of contests.

In a three-point contest featuring teams consisting of one men's player, one women's player and one student chosen at random, seniors Michelle Zylstra and Jitim Young teamed with Tiffany Hackworth to take the crown. In addition to the students participating in the contest, all fans who attended were given a card to cheer for one of the four participating teams. The fans who had the winning team received a Willie the Wildcat Bobblehead doll.

Following that, a game of knockout took place and was won by a student chosen from out of the crowd.

A question-and-answer session took place for the Wildcat coaches and players; people who had their questions used received a free t-shirt.

The highlight of the evening came when Dania Aguero and Matthew Larson were selected from the Wildside crowd to participate in a contest for $10,000. They had to make a layup, a foul shot, a three-pointer and a half-court shot within 24 seconds. Unfortunately, neither was successful.

Finally, we have the winner of a $25 Maggiano's gift certificate -- all student basketball season ticket holders who filled out a survey about last night's event were eligible for the prize, which goes to...Jonathan Adams! Jonathan, contact the Northwestern University Athletic Marketing Department at wildcatmarketing@northwestern.edu to collect your gift certificate, and congratulations!
