WATERLOO, Iowa - Northwestern got a strong effort from senior Emily Blakeslee Saturday, as the Wildcats finished 24th out of 33 teams in the women's Gold race at the Pre-National Invitational in Waterloo, Iowa. The 'Cats scored 595 points on the day.
The meet took place on the course that will host the NCAA Championships next month, and brought out all of the top teams in the nation.
Blakeslee ended up as the top 'Cat on the day, finishing 70th overall in 21:53.7 on the 6-kilometer course. Junior Diana Hossfeld, who was NU's top finisher in every race she had run prior to Saturday, was on Blakeslee's heels -- her time was 21:59.1 which placed her 74th.
Sophomore Kalysta Harmon broke through to finish third for Northwestern, clocking 22:38.6 to place 129th overall. Senior Nicole Kalogeropoulos was fourth for NU and 143rd overall in 22:49.2, while senior Nora Colligan edged out freshman teammate Casey Shea to finish as the Wildcats' fifth runner -- Colligan was 179th overall in 23:24.1, while Shea was 180th in 23:24.8. Freshman Mallory O'Niel was NU's other runner Saturday, and was 193rd overall in 23:40.2.
Led by a 1-2 finish from Alicia Craig and Sara Bei, Stanford took the team title in the Gold race with 66 points. North Carolina State was second with 101 points.
At the UW-Parkside Invitational in Kenosha, Wis., the 'Cats were sixth out of 24 squads. Indiana Wesleyan won the team title with 84 points, defeating Illinois-Chicago by 30 points. NU scored 184 points.
Junior Kyna Forkins was NU's top runner in Kenosha, covering the 5-kilometer course in 19:06 to place 16th overall. Forkins ran with the team at the championship meets last year and looks to be rounding into form as the Big Ten meet approaches, signalling the beginning of the championship season.
Lesley Meade was Northwestern's next runner, finishing 33rd in 19:40; she was followed by Katie Romaine, who was 35th in 19:41. Lindsay McAlister (46th in 19:48) and Monika Rymsza (86th in 20:22) were the Wildcats' other scorers. A total of 12 women ran at UW-Parkside Saturday.
Northwestern's next meet will take place Sunday, Nov. 2 -- the Big Ten Championships, which will take place in East Lansing, Mich., and be hosted by Michigan State.
