EVANSTON, Ill. -
Jitim Young (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) and Samantha McComb (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) of the Northwestern basketball teams garnered Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week honors. NU announced the awards for Young and McComb's athletic performance from the week of Dec. 30.
Young, a junior guard, got back on track this week, scoring 11 points, snaring four rebounds and tying a career high with five assists Monday against Buffalo. Against Long Island, Young celebrated the New Year by scoring 15 points, grabbing a career-best 13 rebounds (six on the offensive glass), dishing out four assists and collecting five steals. He also did not commit a turnover in 34 minutes. Young's 15 points marked his best effort in nine games, and the 13 rebounds was eight better than NU's second-leading rebounder, Jason Burke. Young is third on the team in scoring (10.7 ppg), second in rebounding (4.5 rpg), and first in steals (22).
McComb played an integral part in Northwestern's 52-46 win against Michigan State last Thursday. McComb, who averaged 12.3 points per game last week, scored a team-high 14 against MSU as NU won its first regular-season Big Ten game since Jan. 20, 2000, when the Wildcats defeated Minnesota 50-44 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. McComb also nailed six three-pointers last week, including four against 24th-ranked DePaul en route to a career-high 21 points.
