EVANSTON - The 16th-ranked Northwestern women's tennis team, playing its second match in as many days, defeated Furman 7-0 Friday evening at the Combe Tennis Center. The Wildcats improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Paladins fall to 1-2.
NU claimed the first point of the match with a sweep of doubles. Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush handed Mary Kovarik and Caroline Bentley a quick loss at No. 1 (8-1). Andrea Yung and Ruth Barnes were the 8-5 winners at No. 2 over Natalie The and Shannon Morris. At No. 3, Kristi Roemer and Jamie Peisel defeated Mary Neill Hagood and Krista Thomson 8-5.
In singles, the 'Cats kept the momentum and were straight-set winners at each position. Grier remains undefeated (6-0) at No. 1 with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Kovarik. Stacy Kokx clinched the match for the 'Cats with a 6-4, 6-0 defeat of Morris at No. 6. Yung gave the Wildcats a scare falling behind in the second set to The at No. 3. Down 3-2, Yung battled back, and the two traded points from there. The set was tied at four and then again at five before Yung was able to put it away for good, winning 7-5.
The Wildcats conclude their three-match homestand on Sunday as they host fifth-ranked North Carolina. Match time is scheduled for noon.
