Northwestern Heads to Lone Star Duals

EVANSTON, Ill. - With the 40th Midlands Championships in the rear-view mirror, Northwestern's dual schedule kicks into full gear beginning Saturday at the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas. Northwestern (2-0) will begin competition against Cal-Poly at 10 a.m., and then will meet Navy at 2 p.m. and Harvard at 6 p.m.
John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy), Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop McNamara) and John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) have paced the Wildcats thus far. Kimberlin has a team-high 16 wins (eight losses) and Velez has a 15-8 mark, including five wins by major decision. Giacche has a 14-5 record. Freshman Matt Delguyd (Mayfield, Ohio/Mayfield) has also made his mark, wrestling to a 14-9 record at 197 pounds.
Northwestern opened up dual competition in December with a pair of wins against Wisconsin-Parkside and Eastern Illinois. The 'Cats knocked off the Rangers 28-21 and upended the Panthers 21-20.
NU has made some big strides from last season. To this point, their are already six Wildcat wrestlers with 10 or more wins, compared to seven all of last season. NU also has as many wins by technical fall as it did all of last year (six), and with 17 major decisions in its favor, NU is one away from the 2002 mark. The Wildcats also have 11 wins by fall, compared to 14 all of last season.
At 3-1, Navy comes into the weekend having wrestled the most dual meets, led by 174-pounder Michael Barikian. The junior has a team-best 15-4 record. Cal Poly is 2-0, and Harvard has no duals under its belt.
