EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has announced its Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week winners for the week of Jan. 6-12. The men's recipient is wrestling's Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop McNamara), while the women's representative is swimming and diving's Erica Rose (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School).
Kimberlin, a sophomore, went 3-0 last week to lead the Wildcats at the Wendy's Duals. The 157-pounder has won his last six matches, the second longest Wildcat winning streak this season. Earlier in the year, Kimberlin put together nine straight wins, the longest such streak.
He is a team-best 22-8 on the season, including 7-1 in dual competition. Kimberlin, the only Wildcat wrestler to eclipse the 20-win mark thus far in 2003, already has nine more wins than all of last year.
Rose, a junior, overcame a shoulder injury to post two victories in each of the Wildcats' dual meet victories over the weekend.
Rose captured titles in the 1,000 freestyle and the 400 individual medley in NU's 114-109 victory over Michigan State Friday night. She also finished second in the 500 free. Rose followed up the effort by placing first in both the 500 and 1,000 free in Northwestern's 142-99 win against Eastern Michigan.
