EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern named its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 23. Raheem Covington (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) of the football team was the male recipient, and Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobrzeg) of the volleyball team was the female recipient.
Covington helped lead a solid defensive effort on Michigan State's All-America and Heisman Trophy candidate, Charles Rogers. The Wildcats held Rogers to a season-low three receptions for 53 yards, well below his Big-Ten leading figures (7.3 receptions and 158 yards per game). Covington totaled six tackles (four solos), a career-high two interceptions and two pass deflections. Both interceptions came on passes intended for Rogers.
Lodzik, a junior outside hitter, helped lead the Northwestern volleyball team to its first Big Ten 2-0 road start since 1987 with a pair of victories over the weekend. Lodzik recorded match highs of 21 kills and 14 digs in a comeback victory at Illinois on Friday. It was NU's first win at Huff Hall since 1984. In Sunday's win at Purdue, Lodzik posted team season highs of 26 kills and 22 digs. For the weekend she averaged 4.7 kills and 3.6 digs per game.
