Wildcats Finish 17th at Midwest Open

KENOSHA, Wis. - Northwestern sent six runners to the Midwest Open cross country meet Saturday, which was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on its renowned 5-kilometer course.
The Wildcats finished 17th out of 30 teams, accumulating 507 points. The meet was won by Northern Michigan, which scored 32 points to easily outdistance second-place Cedarville (Ohio) University.
A NMSU runner, Caitlin Compton, also took the individual title in 18:14.
For Northwestern, Caroline Speirs (Greer, S.C./Riverside) was the top 'Cat. She covered the 5K course in 20:24, good for 70 points, and was followed closely by Nicole Kalogeropoulos (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd), who clocked 20:30 to scored 75 points.
NU's other scorers were Catie LaBracke (Spring Grove, Ill./Marian Central Catholic), 20:49 for 86 points; Beth Kobeszka (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty-Benton), 22:26 for 132 points; and Melinda Ratz (Columbus, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian Academy), 23:05 for 144 points. Alessandra Vavas (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Vandermeulen) also raced for the Wildcats, clocking 24:46 and scoring 174 points.
Northwestern gets back in action next Saturday, taking part in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis. That meet is scheduled to begin at noon Central.
