EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Hilton Garden Inn of Evanston Athletes of the Week. The selections were made based on athletic competition from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.
Tito Lara (Joliet, Ill./Joliet) shined in his debut weekend as a college soccer player. After a season-opening loss to host Bradley in the Holiday Inn City Centre Classic, Lara and the Wildcats responded against Drury for a 2-1 win. Lara won the game for NU with a goal in the 75th minute after a loose ball ended up in the freshman's feet. The Wildcats, 1-1-0, return to the field Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Western Illinois followed by their home opener Friday, Sept. 6 against Valparaiso.
Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobrzeg), an NU junior outside hitter, burst onto the scene in her first weekend with the Wildcats, earning tournament MVP honors at the Spring Hill Suites Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. A junior college transfer from Triton College, Lodzik posted 16 kills and 18 digs in Northwestern's opening match against SMU. She followed that with 12 kills against East Tennessee State and 14 against Charlotte. Lodzik averaged 4.67 kills per game and had a .400 hitting percentage as the Wildcats went 3-0 to capture the tournament title.
