EVANSTON, Ill. - The third annual Ricky Byrdsong Memorial 5K -- the "Race Against Hate" -- will take place this Saturday, June 29, beginning at 8 a.m. Join runners, walkers and youth milers for this annual event, which begins at Long Field in Evanston, on the corner of Sheridan and Lincoln Roads.

The event is one of many held yearly to honor Ricky Byrdsong, a former Northwestern men's basketball coach who was tragically gunned down in a hate crime on July 2, 1999.

The event is run by the Ricky Byrdsong Foundation, which was established in 1999 to continue his legacy of working with youth. The foundation targets ages eight to 17, taking a particular stand on the importance of giving young people the support they need to learn to accept others.

Thousands of people have participated in this event the last two years, and are expected to participate again on Saturday. Mike Adamle, sports anchor for CBS-Channel 2 in Chicago, will serve as emcee at the race main stage and finish line. Post-race activities will include race awards, a raffle, prizes, food, music and additional entertainment.

All proceeds and entry fees benefit the Ricky Byrdsong Foundation.
