EVANSTON, Ill. - It may be only the first week of May, but NCAA Championship season has arrived. As with recent years, that can only mean one thing -- Northwestern's teams are busy.
Four teams have already qualified for the postseason: men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's golf. The tennis and women's golf teams begin their championship play this weekend, while men's golf begins with regional play next week.
Women's tennis is the 16th seed in its playoff, and the Wildcats will host Illinois-Chicago, Notre Dame and Wisconsin Saturday and Sunday (May 11-12) in one of the 16 regionals taking place around the country. The men's tennis team, meanwhile, travels to the University of Illinois to compete in a regional with the third-seeded Fighting Illini, Indiana State and Butler. In both cases, the winner of the regional will move on to the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas (men) and Palo Alto, Calif. (women).
The women's golf team begins play in the NCAA Central Regional Thursday (May 9) and continuing through Saturday (May 11) at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The top eight teams and top two individual finishers whose teams do not qualify will advance to the NCAA Championship, which will take place at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., from May 21-24.
The men's golf team will compete in the NCAA Central Regional one week after the women, from May 16-18, at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Ark. The top eight teams and top two individual finishers whose teams do not qualify will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will take place at Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio, from May 29-June 1.
