EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's tennis team rolled over the University of Illinois-Chicago, 4-0, for the second straight year to kick off NCAA Championship play.
The Wildcats (22-5) will now meet Wisconsin (17-8) in Sunday's second-round match, which will begin at noon. It will mark the third meeting between the Wildcats and the Badgers in less than a month -- NU defeated Wisconsin, 4-3, ton April 13 in a regular-season match, then clinched the Big Ten Tournament title with a 4-1 win two weeks ago.
NU's match Saturday was the polar opposite of Wisconsin's. While the Badgers needed nearly four hours to outlast Notre Dame, the 'Cats took just two hours in dousing the Flames.
The match began in doubles, where Northwestern got an 8-0 win at No. 2 from Marine Piriou and Jessica Rush and an 8-1 win at No. 1 by Lia Jackson and Simona Petrutiu.
With that point secured, the Wildcats proceeded to dominate UIC in singles, as well. Ruth Barnes got the win parade started with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Zorica Malesevic at No. 6. That was followed quickly by Petrutiu's 6-0, 6-1 win over Karen Liwanpo at No. 4.
Andrea Yung clinched the win for NU, recording a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Zvjezdana Malesevic at No. 5.
All the other matches were abandoned with the Northwestern player ahead.
Sunday's NU-Wisconsin match is scheduled to take place at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center at noon. In the event of inclement weather, the matches will take place in the Combe Tennis Center.
