EVANSTON, Ill. - After winning Game 1 on Friday afternoon (6-3), Northwestern's baseball team dropped a pair of seven-inning games to Michigan State at Rocky Miller Park. Game 1, of Saturday's doubleheader, took just one hour and 45 minutes, with the Spartans winning 3-1. Game 2 lasted just over two hours as MSU walked away with the 9-1 victory.
The big blow came in the fourth inning when State put a seven spot, adding single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. In the fourth, three State hits coupled with two throwing errors by starting pitcher Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) led to the seven runs.
NU used three pitchers in the inning, settling on senior Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) to close out the game. Adams threw three and one-third innings, giving up two runs (one earned) while striking out three.
Offensively NU swung the bats well, just not at the right times. The 'Cats matched State's 11 hits, but could score just one run, an RBI single by Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) in the bottom of the ninth inning. Roeder finished the game 3-for-4.
Senior Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) extended his hitting streak to eight games with his 2-for-3 performance. Sophomore left fielder Dan Pohlman was a perfect 3-for-3, legging out an infield single in the ninth inning.
NU falls to 8-15 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten. The two teams will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. They will play a single nine-inning contest.
