EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's baseball team opened its 2002 home baseball season with a 15-12 loss to Chicago State Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. The Cougars used four first-inning runs to build a 14-2 lead before NU could muster any kind of comeback. Try as they did, it was too little too late as NU fell to 7-13 overall.

Freshman Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) took the loss, lasting just two-thirds of the first inning in his collegiate debut. Classmate Evan Blesoff (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) relieved Davidson, throwing four and one-third innings before sophomore Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West) took the helm. Krynski lasted just one out, giving up two runs, before Chris Hayes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) got the call. Hayes went two and two-thirds before senior Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) was called upon to throw the final three outs.

Offensively, the Wildcats managed to out-hit the Cougars 15-11 with sophomore David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) leading the way, going 3-for-3 from the plate. Gresky drove in three runs while hitting his second homer of the season and his fourth and fifth doubles. Senior Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) also had three hits, ending the day 3-for-6 with two doubles and two RBI. Fellow senior Matt Thompson (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) entered the game as a pinch-hitter and eventually took over defensive duties at first base. Thompson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while lining his first double of the season into the left field corner.

NU is back in action this weekend, taking on conference foe, Michigan State. The four-game series begins at 3 pm CST Friday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. As of April 2, the Spartans have a record of 17-5 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
