SAINT LOUIS - Senior pitcher Zach Schara (Madison, Wis./West) handed Saint Louis its first loss of the season in a one-hit game Friday, as the Northwestern baseball team defeated the Billikens 4-0.
Schara's nine-inning performance on the mound improved NU's record to 3-5, while SLU fell to 7-1.
This marks the first time this season the pitching has led the Wildcats' attack. Schara (2-1) gave up a single in the fourth inning to Ryan Murphy, struck out six and only walked one batter. Of his 94 total pitches, 73 were strikes.
"He was in command the whole time, throwing in the low 90's the whole game," assistant coach Tim Stoddard said of Schara's performance.
This is Schara's first one-hitter, although he threw a no-hitter as a freshman in 1999.
On the offensive side, NU was led by second baseman Eric Roeder (Onstead, Mich./Onstead), who went three-for-four with an RBI. The leadoff batter for the 'Cats, Roeder also recorded a walk to reach base each time he was at the plate.
In the field, the Wildcats committed no errors while Saint Louis had three. The infield of Roeder, third baseman Mike Phelps (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) and shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) notched 12 assists.
The 'Cats and the Billikens square off again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
