ALBANY, N.Y. - After the first day of competition at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, Northwestern has one of two men still alive. Ryan Kane (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) lost his first two matches at 165 pounds, but John Giacche (Flemington, N.J./Blair Academy) will return to Pepsi Arena tomorrow morning for consolation action.
Giacche, the 18th ranked wrestler in the nation at 141 pounds, defeated Rob Becker of George Mason University in first round action, 11-4. Round two pitted the Wildcat junior against fourth-seeded Dylan Long of Northern Iowa. Long edged Giacche, 3-2, sending him to the consolation round. Tomorrow, Giacche will square off against Luke Moffitt of Iowa.
Kane, NU's only other NCAA qualifier, fell in his morning match to fifth-seeded Josh Henson of Penn by a technical fall at 4:40 (17-2). He was eliminated from the championships with a 6-4 loss to Pat O'Donnell of Harvard. Kane ends his sophomore campaign with a 28-13 record (15-3 duals, 5-1 Big Ten).
