Box Score

ST. LOUIS - After dropping a heartbreaker in Game 1, 4-3, Northwestern bounced back to defeat St. Louis University 6-4 in a seven-inning contest. The games were played at the Billiken Sports Center in St. Louis, Mo.

Saint Louis jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after three innings and stretched it to a 4-1 advantage before NU answered with two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to win 6-4.

Senior right-hander Gabe Ribas (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) picked up his first win of the season, throwing five complete innings, striking out five and walking none. On the season, Ribas has 14 Ks and just two walks in 15.2 innings of work.

Freshman James Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) and sophomore Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) threw two innings of hitless baseball, with Pohlman picking up his second save of the season. It was Happ's fourth appearance of the year.

Offensively, catcher Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) hit his second home run of the season, leading off the second inning. NU didn't get back in the scoring column until the fifth inning when senior Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) walked. Junior Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) followed with a single to right, advancing Haake to second. The two Wildcat runners were driven in by Travis Tharp's (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) triple down the rightfield line.

In the sixth inning, sophomore Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West) reached first base on a passed ball and pinch-hitter Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel) hit an infield single to the pitcher. Padgett then hit a fielder's choice, advancing McMahon to second as Brimmer was forced out at third. After a Billiken passed ball, sophomore David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) knocked a pinch-hit single to center, scoring Padgett from second and pinch-runner Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) from third. After another NU out and a Billiken pitching change, Gresky stole second and driven in by Haake's infield single to first, to end the Wildcat scoring.

The Wildcats are next in action when they travel to Homestead, Fla., for a five-game road trip. Game 1 begins at 11 am EST on Saturday, March 23 vs. Drexel.
