ST. LOUIS - After sitting around all day Saturday waiting for the wind and cold weather to go away, Northwestern and Saint Louis University took to the diamond and played 16 innings of baseball.
The first game of the day was a nine-inning affair with NU coming up short, losing 4-3. Game 2 was a seven-inning contest that saw the Wildcats score two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to win 6-4. NU took two-of-three from the Billikens over the weekend.
In Game 1, Saint Louis held off a late-inning comeback by the Wildcats to win 4-3. Senior Steve Haake (Belleville, Ill./Gibault) got the ball rolling in the seventh inning with a leadoff bunt single. Junior Brandon Ackley (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) walked, and both Wildcats quickly advanced on a Billiken balk. After an NU out, sophomore Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) grounded out to first, scoring Haake from third. Junior Ken Padgett (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) followed with a single to left, allowing Ackley to score from third. Pinch-hitter Travis Tharp (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) followed with a single to left but was stranded, leaving the score 4-2.
NU scored a single run in the top of the ninth when Ackley led off with a solo home run over the leftfield fence. It was Ackley's second round-tripper of the year.
The pitching duties fell on senior left-hander Ryan Bos (Barrington, Ill./Lake Zurich), throwing six strong innings. Bos fell to 0-3 on the season, with a 2.79 ERA in 19.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) threw the final two innings, giving up no runs on five hits.
