MADISON, Wis. - The No. 17 Wildcats notched their second top-ten win of the week, defeating ninth-ranked Fresno State, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in the consolation round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships. Northwestern finished the tournament 2-1 and is 5-2 on the season. Fresno State fell to 2-2.
Northwestern got off to a slow start, losing the doubles point as Fresno State swept. In singles, Ruth Barnes clinched the match for the 'Cats with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kelly Ramirez at No. 6. Marine Piriou defeated Kim Niggemeyer, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(5) at No. 1. Undefeated this week, Jessica Rush downed Simone Jardim at No. 3 (6-1, 0-6, 6-4). Simona Petrutiu, also undefeated in tournament play, won at No. 5, defeating Chantel Wiggins, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Wildcats travel to North Carolina to take on the Tarheels, Saturday, Feb. 16. Match time is set for noon EST.
