MADISON, Wis. - The No. 17 Wildcats avenged a season-ending loss to USC in the third round of last year's NCAA Championships Friday with a 4-3 win over the Trojans in the consolation round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. The Wildcats are 1-1 in the tournament and 4-2 on the season. USC fell to 2-3.

The 'Cats opened the match by winning the doubles point for the early lead. Marine Piriou and Jessica Rush defeated Anita Loyola and Luana Magnani, 8-5, at No. 2. The 'Cats fell to the Trojans at No. 1, 8-7(2), but Stacy Kokx and Ruth Barnes clinched the point at No. 3 by defeating Bernadette Bayani and Melissa Esmero, 9-7.

In singles, the 95th-ranked Rush defeated USC's Loyola (ranked 46th) in three sets to clinch the match for NU. Down after the first set, Rush rallied to win the second 6-4 and dominated the third set, 6-1, for the win. Simona Petrutiu and Barnes each won in straight sets at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, to give NU its other two points in a match that took six hours and 45 minutes.

Northwestern will face Fresno State Saturday at 9 a.m. at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center in another consolation-round match.
