Women's Tennis Sweeps Utah

EVANSTON, Ill. - For the second time in as many days, the Northwestern women's tennis team swept its opponent. NU (3-1, 0-0) defeated Utah (3-2, 1-0) in straight sets Sunday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center.
With the doubles lineup changed again, Northwestern swept Utah for the first point of the match. Seniors Lia Jackson and Simona Petrutiu defeated Linn Ronnberg and Sheri Esrock at No. 1 (8-3). Playing at No. 2, junior Marine Piriou and sophomore Jessica Rush shut out Utah's Allison Hansen and Cassie Kasteler. Sophomores Ruth Barnes and Stacy Kokx won at No. 3, defeating Irini Kotoglou and Ellen Svensson, 8-2.
The Wildcats won the singles portion of the match with ease, winning all six in straight sets. Petrutiu gave the Wildcats their second point of the match with her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hansen. Piriou defeated Ronnberg at the top spot, 6-1, 6-2. Making her collegiate debut, Kristi Roemer sealed the win for the 'Cats with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kasteler at No. 6. In grueling second sets, Jackson and Rush pulled out wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
The Wildcats are next in action on Thursday when they play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships. The matches will take place at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis. Match times will be announced at a later time.
