EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's basketball lost 87-69 to Ohio State Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The 'Cats (4-21, 0-14 Big Ten) committed 28 turnovers, leading to 42 Buckeye points.
Freshman center Sarah Kwasinski (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) dominated inside, pouring in a game-high 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Kwasinski also blocked four shots, giving her 51 on the season. She moved past Anucha Browne's 1982-83 mark for third on NU's single-season blocks list.
OSU (12-14, 7-8 Big Ten) maintained a double-digit lead for most of the first half, but NU sliced into the deficit with a furious first-half finish. Down 14 with eight seconds left in the half, Kwasinski converted a three-point play. NU regained possession under the Buckeye basket with three seconds left after an OSU foul. Off the inbounds, freshman Samantha McComb (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) swished a 45-footer at the buzzer to cut the lead to eight.
NU got the lead down to five early in the second stanza on a Kwasinski layup, but that was as close as NU got.
McComb and classmate Melissa Culver (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) each netted 10 points for the 'Cats. Junior Anya Walker (Beloit, Wis./Beloit) notched a season-high 11 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Freshman Suzanne Morrison (Franklin, Mich./Detroit Country Day) added nine off the bench for NU in the loss.
Center Courtney Coleman led Ohio State with 21 points. Guard Tomeka Brown finished with 14 points and 10 steals.
Northwestern wraps up its home schedule this Thursday, Michigan at 7 p.m.
